Blood Wedding-Journal #1

The symbol of the knife is the first symbol that is very evident within the first few pages of the play. Within the first scene the knife is described as an object that is created by a monster. We later learn that the father and brother of the bridegroom were both murdered by a knife. This creates a tension between the bridegroom and his mother. This creates tension between the bridegroom and his mother. It almostvseems like the knife is a symbol for destruction within the family? This becomes interesting in that the conversation without any blatant subject changes steadily transfers over to talking about the bride. The mother then describes the knife as a serpent which she calls the bride at the very end of the book... Another symbol in the last few pages of the scene is water. The neighbor describes the person who takes the water to the reapers as being black from the sun. I interpret this as disrupting the flow of water therefore being burned by the sun. If this were the case then water could represent peace in these first few pages? Or maybe more specifically peace within the society.

  1. Mark I like your analysis with the knife, and I was thinking that it is also important to look at what the knife is cutting. In the first scene it is cutting grapes, and I think grapes serve as a symbol of wealth, because many vineyard owners are wealthy. And if this is true then I think that Lorca was reflecting his wish to not be born into a wealthy family.

  2. The knife is also described being bad but also something that can cut into a man's body. You could consider looking into that and seeing where it takes you.

  3. I think the knife also represents the divide between the two families. Also it makes sense that the knife could be a symbol for the bride because the bride seems like this nice, sweet, innocent person when truly she is this mean, evil, cheater. So knives have a double edged blade just like the bride has a double personality.

  4. I agree with Michelle that the knife is a symbol for the bride. For the most part she is able to remain "safe" or "calm" which does not affect anyone in the play. But in those rare occasions where we see her be utterly upset for no reason, this is the point where the knife is dangerous.
